Full Army Project - 01 - Planning

I want to paint a full 40k army this year. I’ve done it before, I used to paint one a year to enter tournaments and go for the painting prize, best army etc and was pretty successful.

But its been years and I tend to play skirmish games now. The closest i’ve been to painting a full army was getting every model I needed for the red king campaign for frostgrave done in a month.

I’ve watched many painting marathons on YouTube and the glacial geek painting a full army in a month and I think I want to do something similar.

But rather than just dive in i want to plan this out.

The topics I can think of for prep are:

When - i cannot just jump into this, what with work, kids etc so I need to find a week that I can set aside to do this. Currently the thinking is August but I will see how the year goes. I won’t be doing all nighters so it will be across days.

What - i know i’m doing a sisters of battle army but I need to work out which exact models and if I need to buy any new ones.

Prep - a few areas under this category, what prep work I need to do.

Assembly - once I know what i’m going to paint i need to assemble them all. I don’t want to old another marathon so I need to make time between now and then to get them all assembled and ready for painting.

Paint scheme - i don’t know what colour im going to paint them, highlights etc. I have some models spray primed ready to test so I need to do that and then settle on a colour scheme. And then I need to get all the paints ready, premix and highlights that are mixes and make sure I don’t run out of paints during the week.

Priming - prior to the week I need everything primed and ready to go. So I need to make sure I have enough spray paint and get them done in time.

Materials

Handles - to be efficient I need each model on a painting handle ready to go, less tike switching back and forth will save me time. i currently use gw painting handles and have 10 or so but thats cost prohibitive so I will likely need to get a lot of pieces of dowel cut to size.

Brushes - don’t want to muck around with brushes so I need to make sure I have spares of all the brushes I want to use and all prepped and ready to go.

Bases - I need all the bases prepped and ready to go. Once I work out a style I need to either buy them all or make them all. Depending on what I do I may just cast them just like I did back in the ironhalo days.

Storage - as the assembled models will likely be pinned to the dowe handle I need somewhere to store them before the painting week.

Wet pallette, water etc - making sure I have all the spare sheets fkr the wet pallette, clean water pots and somewhere to dump the old water and refill without getting up all the time. Plus any other sundries needed.

Location - i have a good painting desk and lamp and a great chair so I just need to make sure its all ready to go. The painting room will be carpeted by then so it will be more comfortable, so its just making sure.

So a few things to do and I am sure this is just the start of the list, but its a good place to start and get thinking. I’ll keep updating as I work through this all with a view to getting this project done.

Any feedback or suggestions will be welcome.
